Long bio:

Jayna Baas (pronounced as in “baa, baa, black sheep”) is the award-winning author of the For Liberty & Conscience series and serves as director of The Christian PEN: Proofreaders and Editors Network. She writes and edits from beautiful northern Michigan, where she strives to give readers faith-filled adventures bursting with courageous characters and biblical truth.

In between writing her own books and editing other people’s books, Jayna seeks out new adventures on the screen, on the page, and in the kitchen. She also loves to spend time with her great family of real people and the family of pretend people who live in her head. (Yes, she does know her characters are not real. No, she does not want you to tell them she said so.)

Although her love of words extends to multiple genres, Jayna’s favorite story is John 3:16. Learn more and join Jayna’s email list at booksbyjayna.com.

Patriot at the River: A Novel of the American Revolution

For Liberty & Conscience #2

The fight he got wasn’t the fight he wanted.

It’s 1780, and North Carolina is a battleground. Backcountry scout Benjamin Woodbridge is guarding a Patriot camp when he sees the king’s men pursuing a civilian. Never one to stand by while someone is in trouble, Benjamin steps in to help the stranger and finds an unexpected ally.

But the same British officer who targeted the stranger is also targeting Benjamin’s hometown. After Benjamin is wounded on a lonely mountain trail, he watches his settlement fall to the man who crushed his father’s cause nine years earlier. Benjamin’s fight has come home to the very people he wanted to protect—his shy younger sister and the woman who has given them both a home.

Now, with the help of some unlikely comrades and the indomitable Aunt Kate, Benjamin must fight for what he loves before his settlement goes up in flames. But only if he can fight himself first.

Endorsements

A fast-paced tale, Patriot at the River captures the spirit of the American Revolution in spades. Through courageous flesh-and-blood characters in the Carolina backcountry who are the embodiment of soul liberty, this well-layered novel offers a fresh look at freedom and those who fought to win it not only for themselves but generations to come. Huzzah!

—Laura Frantz, Christy Award–winning author of The Frontiersman’s Daughter

I am so impressed with Jayna Baas and this story! Intense, at times heartstopping, richly textured and steeped in an authentic Carolina backcountry voice. Reading it felt like visiting old friends that I hadn’t yet met.

—Shannon McNear, Selah Award–winning author of the Daughters of the Lost Colony series

If you want a story with grit, hard battles, beautiful relationships, and strong characters, all wrapped up in a satisfying ending, Patriot at the River is a book that won’t disappoint. Highly recommended!

Preacher on the Run book cover

Preacher on the Run: A Novel of Early America

For Liberty & Conscience #1

He preaches truth. The Crown calls it treason.

It’s 1771, and tensions run high in colonial North Carolina. Frontier preacher Robert Boothe has spent the last four years standing against unlawful taxes and government corruption.

To his close-knit congregation, Robert is a courageous man of God who defends the truth. To his wife and young daughter, he’s a devoted protector who longs to shield them from the growing unrest. To the governor’s men, he’s a rebel who preaches a dangerous gospel of God-given freedom.

No one sees the doubts he wrestles in his own heart.

Then the governor’s ambitious new agent arrives to make an example of Robert’s resistance. Robert refuses to back down, even when he’s arrested in front of his church on a Sunday morning. But when his family and church are caught in the crossfire, what price will Robert pay to keep them safe?

Endorsements

Compelling and convicting, Preacher on the Run immerses readers in early America, bringing to light a piece of lesser-known history that shaped our nation. The characters come alive on the page and draw you in as they wrestle with faith, freedom, and the intersection of the two. Their fears and failures are relatable, their courage admirable, and their victories wholeheartedly rewarding. Jayna Baas crafts a beautiful and engaging story that will challenge your own faith and inspire you long after you’ve turned the last page.

—Megan Soja, award-winning author of Spark of the Revolution

With lively dialogue and rich characterization, Jayna Baas brings to life a neglected chapter of the American Revolution.

—Lynne Basham Tagawa, Selah Awards finalist and author of The Shenandoah Road

An entertaining, inspiring, and worthwhile read.
