A richly detailed story of faith and love put to the test against the backdrop of the Revolution.
My rating: ★★★★☆
Megan Soja weaves another richly detailed story of faith and love put to the test against the backdrop of the Revolution in Boston.
As with Megan’s other books, her research shines through on every page, especially as Boston prepares for the Battle of Bunker Hill and her characters prepare to live through it (at least we hope they live through it). That really helps bring the historical experience to life as Libby and Isaac both wrestle with the complicated decisions they face.
It’s complicated
What would it be like to live in Boston during the British siege? What happens if you’re inadvertently tangled up in the dangerous espionage business? How do you reconcile your heart’s longings with the hard reality of the world you live in?
Such complicated decisions feel very realistic, and yet they also showcase the power of biblical truth despite our weakness. This is one thing I love about Megan Soja’s writing. She’s not afraid to weave real scriptural truth into her characters’ lives, and the story is only stronger because of it. Themes that have been explored again and again feel freshly written and so applicable to real life.
Libby’s patient, wise mother was one of my favorite characters, and I appreciated finding a Christian novel that actually addressed the danger in making decisions based solely on feelings and desires rather than on the Lord’s wisdom. A refreshing change from all the “follow your heart” tropes that are so prevalent.
Who will enjoy Scars of the Revolution?
Scars of the Revolution is more romance-centric than the first two books in the series (Spark of the Revolution and Secrets of the Revolution), although those had their own share of sweet romance. This one simply has more pining and emotional focus, which some readers will prefer and others won’t. Still, I was glad to see that elements that could have turned into “easy answers” didn’t go that direction at all. Megan Soja has a talent for subverting my expectations in the best of ways, and I’m eagerly anticipating the release of the fourth book!
Highly recommended for fans of Laura Frantz or anyone looking for some Revolutionary history disguised as a sweet Christian romance.
